Nicolas Ghesquière takes the closing bow at Louis Vuitton’s Resort 2027 show.

In the world of cinema, there’s an entrenched notion that older directors don’t make good movies. Or at least, that they don’t make movies nearly as good as the ones they shepherded at the start of their careers. Quentin Tarantino frequently acknowledges this and has vowed to make no more than 10 films as a result – though his final outing, curiously, keeps getting pushed further and further. The concept is so pervasive that it prompted a dedicated season from every Hollywood history buff’s favorite podcast, You Must Remember This. It’s an interesting idea, and one that largely holds true when scanning the filmographies of even the greatest auteurs. Lately, I’ve begun to wonder if the same can be said of designers.
