Thank you for this post, I couldn’t agree more! Everyone has missed the point that Alaïa honored women with clothes real women actually wore. I did a post on him a month or so ago. He was the last of the greats.
Thank you for reading! I agree he was the last, sadly. I wish the industry would actually support someone like him coming up in the ranks, but the system of today simply wouldn't. I do have hope that someone with this kind of talent will emerge and have the strength to go their own way as Azzedine did.
Do you watch Real Housewives? Jenna Lyons brings out a jacket she made from a comforter and it reminds me of the Charles James puffer, I wonder if that was on her mood board.
I do, and I know exactly the moment you mean! It's certainly a possibility, but I also wonder if maybe she was looking at a lot of Norma Kamali at that time.
This was perfect! It’s so true - I would not want to have to bend or sit down in ANY of these new garments in public. Boring to celebrate only one body type, and certainly not in line with the Alaïa ethos
Thank you for this post. Beautifully expressed sentiments which underpin the truth that authenticity in creative expression speaks to the soul. While imitative endeavours leave us frustrated and somehow irritated by their try-hard earnestness. Soul less facsimiles of true art make me upset. Downtown Abbey is a tv example which irritates me no end. Something about mediocre creative expressions garnering widespread acceptance and attention. Or the Met Gala is another example. Put it to bed ASAP!
I didn’t know Maestro Alaia, but I miss his genius & refreshing view he had of life, family & his clients. But I do like what Pieter Mulier does visually. Yes, it’s a certain female type & fit, unlike Alaia, but I enjoy the visuality of designs

We can hope!
What a text. Bravo!

Looking forward to watching the Alaïa doc!

Oooh yes, you’re right! It is very Norma!

Thank you so much! I would love to see the designer of the house embrace what Alaïa was really about and not just assume it was all stretch knits.
This was delightful to read. I'm now excited to watch this short Documentary you linked!
Thank you! And the documentary is such a wonderful, intimate gem with great footage and interviews – I hope you like!

As Nancy Mitford would say: “Oh. The irritation!”
